Once upon a time, bands were hand-picked by Artist & Repertoires (A&R). These are the people who represented music labels and were the ultimate gatekeepers of the music industry. If a band was approached by an A&R then said band knew that they were on their way to rock stardom.
Of course, that doesn’t happen anymore. It is not impossible, it is just unlikely.
A&R’s are completely irrelevant in making dreams come true. While their job description is still valid, their no longer in the business of finding talent as opposed to maintaining talent. After all, social media such as YouTube, Vimeo, and Soundcloud does a good job of finding talent on their behalf.
So, how can YOUR band move past the A&R and make it “big time”? One way is to take an independent DIY route. That means: do everything possible to get your band’s name out there and into the ears of audiences. There are pros and cons to this route. However, if your band has no idea what is going on then the cons will tip the scale. Think about it.
What happens if your band’s Youtube video flopped? Or that link on Soundcloud only reached your Mom’s aunt and nobody else? Does your band go in ‘washing machine’ (also known as spam) mode and start spinning the same social media tweet/post/link to everyone on your lists? Does your band call it quits after one bad live show? Or does your band decide their going to be proactive and then proceeds to do a Google search on ‘how to make music go viral’?
If any of that sounds familiar, your band needs therapy. *Band management therapy, that is.
I’m not a psychologist, I won’t prescribe medication and I didn’t go to ‘music management’ school. Everything I’m about to tell you, I learned on the job as a band manager. Some of it is common sense and some of it is useful in helping push your artistry forward.
